Joseph Alaverdeli, one of the thirteen Assyrian Fathers, the founder of the cathedral is buried in St. George’s church of Alaverdi.

Until today it was presumed that the remains of the saint were buried in the Northern part of the cathedral, but this grave turned out to be symbolic. It is suggested that the remains of the saint were duly hidden in the XV century during restoration works so that while invasions and disturbances the remains of the saint were protected from desecration.
